Proper Packing Techniques
Remember to not overfill or under fill boxes when packing and stacking. To maintain structural integrity, boxes must be packed according to their recommended capacity to avoid the common troubles of collapse and rupture.
Be kind to your back and consolidate heavy items like dishes and books into smaller boxes with a maximum weight of 25 pounds. Always use foam and / or bubble wrap to cushion and protect fragile goods. Glass items should always be wrapped individually. Plates should be stacked on edge with cushioning to separate one from another. Cups and bowls should be fitted together snugly.
Utilize dressers and cabinets to store soft, unbreakable items such as bed linens, bath towels and clothing. Large appliances may also double as additional storage space. Remember to detach legs from furniture, beds and tables to create more room and a better fit for all your belongings. Always clean all clothing and fabric prior to storing to eliminate dust and odors from accumulating.
Damage Control
Always wrap and cover chairs with plastic while protecting chair legs with brown paper. Use quality padding to protect furniture. Consider separating boxes and other items from the unit floor with padding or pallets. Limit the danger of rust appearing on items such as appliances, tools and bikes by wiping and cleaning them prior to storing with the proper oil. Pictures should always be kept in photo albums when stored for a considerable period of time. Large pictures and paintings should be protected between thick cardboard to prevent damage due to shattered glass or torn fabric. Be careful when wrapping items in newspaper as they may be susceptible to damage from newsprint. Remember . . . we offer content insurance to give you added protection and peace of mind!
Staying Organized
Create a list of all boxes to be stored that matches labels affixed to each box. Heavy items should always be stored underneath lighter items. Belongings may also be stored on top of heavier furniture pieces such as cabinets and dressers. Try to place all frequently used and needed items in the front of your storage space for easier access.
Stop Before You Store
Certain items are not meant for storage:
- All toxic, perishable, flammable and explosive materials should never be stored for any period of time.
- Any items powered by fuel and oil must be drained and emptied prior to storing.
